I am going to start a new, for me, tradition. I am 54,000 words into my novel. I hope to finish it by Wednesday. There was a movie, I loved, way back in the 90s about a writer and his celebratory finishing of his novel. A bottle of Champagne, a single match and a single cigarette. (Can you name the movie?) Me, I am going to substitute the cigarette with a cigar, though.
I am going to sit here and write for the rest of the day, today. Just as soon as I get off of Blogger, Twitter, and Facebook, wash my b’fast and lunch dishes, take the clothes out of the dryer and fold them, then I will will write until I decide to stop. Or, until the music stop, about 5 hours worth. A writer’s gotta write!
It’s that time of the year again, time for Resolutions. I have posted many times that I do not make resolutions; I just plan and do the deeds. However, I say this every year and I do make a list of things that I have to do to keep my sanity, especially in the realm of writing.
I have been writing, but only posting to my blog. Why you ask? I gotta stop drinking, procrastinating and going onto Facebook, and watching sports, and…but I digress.
I am not going to get caught up in the hype of resolutions, on the first day of January. Besides, I think all resolutions are a precursor to failure. However, I personally find that there really isn’t anything wrong with failure, failure means, you at least tried.
What I am going to do, try and maybe fail, and or, try and succeed, well, there are a bunch of things that I must do for the year of 2017 and beyond. I really have to finish all of the below because, I am tired of eating PB&J every day, with water. I really miss eating steak, salmon, caviar, champagne…even though I am a vegetarian, I still miss em all.
My goals for 2017:
Finish the novel I started for NaNoWriMo, by at least by the end February, or at least sometime this year, “Marooned”. I am into about 10k words (that took me six days to write 10k words), and would love to end with at least, 60k – 70k+ words. I have had a cover created, which has inspired me to write the story, all of which is glued to a tiny portion of my brain.
I have finished two books in my “fictional autobiography” series. Now I need to edit them and find someone to read them, for clarity. There are four more in the series to write. The main thing is to find a publisher. I would love to have this series published the old-fashioned, traditional, way. Self-publishing is not out of the question.
In past couple of months, I have come up a few new story lines, Time Sleeper, Day Runner, Comic Con and Surf’s Up. My plate is getting full, and I am hungry.
I started writing a new book of poetry, Haikus. The Haiku’s are in regard to the seasons. I was taking pictures of nature, in the spring, summer, fall and winter. I think I have all the pictures I need. Of course, a few more won’t hurt, and I have written over a hundred and fleshed out many more haiku’s. However, I have over 500 pictures, which is about the amount I would need to finish writing.
In addition, I have finished two screenplays. Now that I found out about Amazon Storywriter, it should help me focus on my story with features such as auto-formatting, import/export of my favorite file formats. They have also announced that they are now welcoming online submissions of drama series projects and are offering new expansions to their open-door submission policy.
A new Web site! I took the last one down three or so years ago. My goal is to get one up and running in the next couple of months.
On 3×5 cards, I have written out 42 stories. Most of them I wrote over 30 years or so ago. It’s time to outline those stories and get productive this years.
I have so many other goals to accomplish this year, and as of the first of January, I can’t think of any resolutions.
It’s now over. The NaNoWriMo is over. Thirty whole days of writing 50k words in 30 day…I pause as I wipe the sweat from my brow.
This is the second time, in five years, that I haven’t finished a story. I wasn’t even close, I quit with less than 1/3 of my story. I am glad I outlined seven pages of my story, though.
As of December 1st, I decided that I would take a break from writing in any of my novels, until January. During the month of November, I came up with two more story lines, and last night, as I was talking to a friend who came up with an awesome title, I decided that I would finish my “Tome” on internet dating.
Of course, all of this, novel writing, isn’t going to take place until January first or within that first week, part of my non-resolution for the year of 2017. In the meantime, I will still write in my blogs and other little bits and pieces on the internet.
As it is, now, I have so many items on my plate, things I should have finished, in the past couple of years. Life for me has been good, but I have to carry it over, that good stuff, into my writing. So much to do, and so much time…
Gosh?! Someone actually purchased one of my books! A hardcover version, book of poems! Wow…thousands more to go.
That’s what I said nine days ago. I really put my heart and soul into putting my book of poems together, almost 25 years of writing and finally putting my manuscript into book form.
Anyway, I went to a forum, on poetry, last month and I remember passing out some flyers and a few bookmarks. I went to another forum last night and I met the woman who purchased my book of poems. She also gave me a 4-Star review! One of the things she did, and I really needed this, appreciated what she did, she made notes of all the little things I missed, and those “friends and family members” missed when I asked them to read and edit my book. I now figure it should take less than an hour to correct those errors and I will put out a second edition.
Thinking back, I used “friends and Family members to edit my books. When I went through the manuscript I found a few more little things and corrected what I found. I then asked my family member to go through the manuscript once again and I then went ahead and had it published.
I am learning about this writing business, slowly…something I should have done many years ago. The truth is, it’s better to pay someone to proofread and edit before you publish.
I have learned that lesson the HARD way. If I could reach around I would kick myself…Hard!
To do or not to do; what was the question? Oh yeah, resolutions. Those things we do, at the beginning of each year and forget about two weeks later. Yeah, I remember those resolutions. When I was younger, I made a few every year and over time did something else anyway.
I don’t make resolution because, to me, they are usually not realistic. I usually just do it, one way or another without being any stronger, thinner, wiser, or poorer, in regard to resolutions. Take for instance, last year, I went to my doctor and he told me that my Blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, and a few other things were high, as well as my weight.
Most of my life I have weighed, on average 210 pounds. I retired in 2006 and sometime in 2009, I got up to 265. In 2013, I decided that I was going to walk and ride my bike just about every day and just stay busy. I finished with about, 1,100 miles, walking and riding my bike.
I said this in January of that year and acted like it was a resolution. In fact, I did manage to do that until October, Halloween of said year; I had gotten down to about 233 and was kind of happy. Of course, the holidays did me in. In January, I was up to 255.
This year I added running and the weight dropped. Today I am at 185 or so. However, that wasn’t part of any resolution, I just did it!
It starts again, do or not do. Well, I say NOT, just do it, is my new theme. NEVERTHELESS, I do plan on doing a few things that I have to get done and now is a good time as any to get them done. One thing I Plan to do, write at least a page a day; in my novel, or my blog, I just plan on writing. That is what I have settled on. I hope that that will help with the writer’s block I have been stuck with the last month or so.
I hope that I can finish my novel this month; I know the direction I want to go and have what I need to add outlined and plotted out. I just have to put it down on paper (computer). There are four or five books I want to write this year;
- Finish R.O.B
- Start, Surf’s up – a short story that just popped into my head recently and of course finish it this year.
- Start, Time’s up – I hope I can make a story out of it, of course, it was in the deep recess of my mind and gurgled up to let me know it was there.
- Start, Reflections of a Lady. Another book of poetry
- Start, My Season, in Haiku’s…
Everything but Time’s up is outlined. I have to do it, I have to write, and it’s in there waiting to get out. I have quite a few more stories outlined and hopefully I can work on them to.
Of course, I also plan to continue on doing things and adding more as something comes up, that’s how my resolutions come up, I must, just do it. In fact, I am going to sit here, every day with a gun to head and write…or else!
